🔑 Keys to Successful Meal Prep: Make Your Week Deliciously Easy
For the past 5 years I have worked as a private chef. When you hear that job title you might think of a private yacht and cooking for celebrities. While I have had some fun doing exceptional events, the bulk of what I do is weekly meal prep.
If you’ve ever come home tired and hungry, only to open the fridge and see… nothing ready to eat—you’re not alone. That’s where meal prep steps in as your weeknight superhero. Whether you're trying to eat healthier, save money, or simply reduce stress, a little prep can go a long way. But what makes meal prep successful? Let’s break it down.
1. ✍️ Plan Before You Prep
Don’t just wing it. Successful meal prep starts with a plan.
Choose 3–4 meals you actually enjoy and wouldn’t mind eating a couple of times.
Make sure your recipes have some ingredient overlap for easier shopping. ( In the Chef world we call this cross utilization)
Balance your meals with protein, fiber, healthy fats, and veggies to keep you full and energized.
Be sure to factor in the kids in the family. Making food that everyone will enjoy is definitely a challenge.
📌 Chef Pro Tip: Theme nights help! Think “Meatless Monday,” “Taco Tuesday,” or “Stir-Fry Friday.”
2. 🛒 Make a Smart Grocery List
Once your meals are chosen, write a categorized grocery list: produce, protein, pantry staples, etc. This saves time at the store and avoids forgotten items (or impulse chip purchases!).
✔️ Always double-check what you already have at home! Make sure you do an inventory!
3. ⏰ Block Out Prep Time
Set aside a specific time for your prep—Sunday afternoons or Monday evenings work well for most. You’ll need about 1–2 hours depending on how much you’re prepping.
🎶 Put on a playlist, podcast, or show—it makes chopping veggies surprisingly relaxing.
4. 🍽️ Keep It Simple
You don’t need to prep every single meal or create gourmet dishes just yet. Start small.
Chop veggies in advance
Pre-cook grains like rice or quinoa
Marinate proteins or cook a batch of chicken (Don’t forget - Chicken thighs have more flavor and are less likely to dry out)
Portion out grab-and-go snacks. This is a must for after school snacks
Think color ! People eat with their eyes first. Make your food look good!
Batch cooking + mixing and matching = easy variety without cooking every day.
5. 🧊 Invest in Quality Containers
Good containers are the unsung heroes of meal prep.
Look for:
Glass or BPA-free plastic
Stackable and freezer-safe options
Divided sections for balanced meals
Clear containers also help you see what you have—less food waste!
6. ❄️ Don’t Be Afraid to Freeze
Some meals are perfect for freezing—soups, chili, lasagna, burrito bowls. Make double portions and freeze half for future you. (They’ll thank you.)
🧊 Chef Pro Tip: Label everything with the date to avoid mystery meals!
7. 🔄 Stay Flexible
Meal prep isn’t about locking yourself into a rigid food routine. It's about setting yourself up for easy, nourishing choices. If you feel bored or busy, swap meals around or throw in a “lazy night” with something frozen or store-bought.
Final Thoughts
Meal prep is a habit, not a one-time fix. Start with what feels manageable, be kind to yourself, and adjust as you go. The more you prepare, the more confident and creative you’ll become.
The goal is for you to open your fridge and smile!
